The Yakima Bible Baptist Home Missions Conference is the product of one preacher, Dr. Dennis Brown having a burden for the planting of Independent Fundamental Baptist Churches here at home. In the February 1970 Western Messenger Dr. Brown wrote the following:
THE NEED OF CHURCHES IN THE NORTHWEST
By The Editor
Being a pastor of the Bible Baptist Church in Yakima for the past two and a half years has given me a wide vision of the need of Bible preaching pastors and churches. There are many towns in Oregon, Washington and Idaho that need a Bible Baptist Church. The Northwest presents a great challenge to young preachers. While we have nearly 2300 churches in the Baptist Bible Fellowship, we only have 35 or 37 of these in Oregon, Idaho and Washington. Most of these tri-state churches are small with a majority of the pastors supplementing their ministries in secular employment. This condition can be and is being overcome due to church growth. The need is not more churches within the National Council of Churches, but independent of the National and World Council of Churches, with a vision and a message to win the lost to Christ. It is my experience and conviction that any pastor who will make as many as 50 calls each with with a purpose, can build a church almost anywhere. The Lord is seeking men today who He can trust, who will go in the name of Christ to lost people with a soul winning message.
I OFFER THIS SUGGESTION
If you have a love for God, the Bible, and souls. and feel called to the Northwest, then come and work in one of our churches, establishing yourself, and the Lord will open a field for you to build a church. A few of our churches up here can pay some kind of a salary to a willing worker, who loves the Lord. If you feel that this editor can be of any assistance to you, please write or call. Just remember if God is in it you can’t fail.
The first Home Missions Conference would be held two years later at Dr. Brown’s church and held every year since. Over the years the most influential preachers in the fundamental movement have been keynote speakers including Dr.A.V. Henderson, then President of Baptist Bible College in Springfield, MD., Dr. James O. Combs, Editor of the Baptist Bible Tribune, Dr. Clifford E. Clark, longtime Pastor of Tulsa Baptist Temple, Dr. John Rawlings, Dr. Carl Boonstra and many more.
Today there are hundreds of Home Mission Conferences held across America including the largest at Heartland Baptist Bible College in Oklahoma City. Every one of these conferences can trace their roots back to Yakima.
Our conference gets bigger and better each year and we hope you will come join us as we make a little bit of history next year at the annual Home Mission Conference. You can pre-register by filling out the form below.
